The
Cashiers-Highlands Plateau has drawn vacationers and second homeowners
for well over a century. A visit to the mountains of Western North
Carolina serves to explain the magnetism of the region, as well
as its timelessness. The ensuing decades have seen much change and
growth, especially as a second home market, and the reasons for
this are clear. One can expect a respite from the chaos of an urban
existence while enjoying world-class golf courses and incomparable
lakes, streams, rivers and waterfalls and seemingly endless forest
vistas.
Golfing
on the plateau offers an exceptional opportunity for the golf enthusiast.
There are approximately 14 golf courses here, most of them designed
by world-renowned course designers. The challenges presented by
the lay of the land on the plateau welcome you to a new game - the
game of "mountain" golf.
If
you are one of those that prefer to be on the water, the plateau
is home to an endless supply of lakes and rivers. Lake Toxaway,
in Transylvania County, is the largest privately owned lake in North
Carolina, covering 640 acres, with 14 miles of shoreline and is
at an elevation of 3,010 feet.
Lake
Glenville is known for being the highest man-made lake on the east
coast at an elevation of 3,492 feet. Having more than a dozen species
of fish, it offers plenty to challenge the skill of fishermen. It
is perfect for boating, and has some of the most coveted shoreline
for home builders in Western North Carolina.
For
those more interested in indoor activities, the Cashiers/Highlands
area is an enclave of culinary and artistic creativity. The many
restaurants in the area offer cuisine and atmosphere unique to these
communities. This uniqueness attracts artists of all types - chefs,
painters, sculptors, glass blowers, stain glass artists, musicians
and textile artists.
Not
only are antiques a large part of the community but many visit just
to purchase mountain treasures of all kinds in the upscale shops.
